Binge #1: Grace & Frankie

This heartfelt and witty Netflix Original is created by Howard J. Morris and Marta Kauffman, one of the producers of the hit series Friends. Well, I think I’ve said enough. Go watch it!

Just kidding. Besides having an awesome executive producer, Grace & Frankie is one of the most characteristic series on Netflix. With the first episode being called ‘The End’, it all starts with a lovely night out. Two couples that are in their 70s join each other for a nice dinner in an elegant restaurant. Let me introduce you, the very decent, uptight Grace Hanson (Jane Fonda) and the spiritual, bananas Frankie Bergstein (Lily Tomlin). As you may already have noticed, these two ladies are totally opposite and their husbands, Robert and Sol, are law-partners at the office. While Grace orders her classic vodka-martini (very dry with two olives), she simultaneously rolls her eyes at Frankie enjoying the hell out of the basket of garlic bread in the middle of the table. ‘’What do you use to sop up sauce with?’’ Frankie asks Grace while her precious baguettes d’ail is taken away right in front of her nose.

Back to dinner, Robert and Sol finally join Grace and Frankie at the table. Sol is anxious and talking way too much about the same seafood platter they only had 700 times, and the women are wondering why this dinner ‘party’ had to happen tonight. Both of them predicted their husbands to announce their retirement, but when Robert finally starts talking about why they’re actually all together, the real issue finally comes to the table, and I’ll tell you: it’s not any extra garlic bread. Sol has finally stopped stress-eating and then all of a sudden, when the news is out, Grace and Frankie’s lives are turned upside down. ‘’I’m leaving you, Grace, and Sol is leaving you, Frankie’’ says Robert, while Grace immediately asks: “Who is she?!”. But, it’s not what you think…

Robert is leaving Grace for Sol, and Sol is leaving Frankie for Robert. Yes, you read it right: they’re in love. Robert and Sol are in love. The two very innocent-seeming business partners had an affair for twenty years and they have been keeping it a secret all this time! As if this isn’t enough, Robert and Sol also announce their marriage! Funny how all of this is casually happening in a public, fancy restaurant, right? The perfect place to tell your wives that the 40 years of marriage was a lie. Well, not all of it, just half of it.

So, wondering how Grace and Frankie will process this? How Robert and Sol will be living happily ever after? How they’re going to tell their children that they’re in a relationship? How awkward future ‘family’ dinners will be? And how the lives of Grace and Frankie are being turned upside down? Find out, and start binge-watching the three seasons available on Netflix of Grace & Frankie, with season 4 yet to come, in 2018.
